IT security for national government, individual states and local authorities
IT security is especially important in the Federal Administrative institution, solely on the basis of its role as a national governing & administrative institution and the "supreme custodian" of the state. The challenges are manifold - ranging from data protection to, as examples, safeguarding citizens' data, securing governmental communication channels and data streams within governmental environments both domestically and overseas, and ensuring homeland security.
The Federal Republic of Germany has assumed an internationally leading position in the ongoing development of key security technologies for many years now. A noteworthy example in this regard is the introduction of the electronic passport (ePass), for which Germany has made major contributions to the design and standardisation.
The German civil service & government have always played a leading role with their high IT infrastructure and IT security standards in Germany - something which the governments of individual states as well as local authorities have also benefited from.
