Social Days in Essen

Edutainment and upcycling with elementary school pupils

What great days Essen was! Together with 4th grade pupils, a secunet team set out to gain a deeper understanding of science, phenomena and technology and to experience them firsthand. With OGS children, the other Essen team is now sharing the experience that wonderful things can be created from trash even when it's 8 degrees outside.

Together with the pupils of the two 4th grades of the Bodelschwingh School, the "Team Trip" visited the Experience Field of the Senses, or Phänomania for short. After small teams were formed, they went on a science safari full of illusions, deceptions and scientific phenomena. The motto was "join in and try it out", and neither the girls nor the secunaut*s needed to be told twice. After this exciting and action-packed voyage of discovery, there was a snack, time together with outdoor games and another highlight: climbing the winding tower. After about 160 steps, all the "climbers" were rewarded with a spectacular view over the Ruhrgebiet!

"I think the day was great! I would definitely be there again for a Social Day, gladly again in the Phänomania and of course gladly again with the children of the Bodelschwinghschule. I think this day is very meaningful - for us as a team and, of course, especially for the children we are giving presents to today."

The motto of the Social Day organized by Essen's "Team Hands-On" was "Turn old into new" - an upcycling project with the OGS children of the Kraienbruch School. During the morning lessons, the materials were prepared under the guidance of OGS director Conny Schlack. During lunch, children and secunau*s were able to make initial contacts over a slice of pizza. . Afterwards, everyone rolled up their sleeves and

  • freed the container in the school garden from ivy and mud,
  • built new, cheerful planters from old hoops and pallets or
  • transformed trash cans into eye-catchers that could be planted.

Brushing, plucking, drilling and designing together was great fun for everyone there. And the good knowledge that something unique can be created from supposed garbage came free of charge. Thanks to the OGS team!
