Border Control New Generation - Europe's most modern border control system for Zurich Airport

With the aim of implementing EU regulations in the long term, better coping with the high passenger volume and making the inspection process at the Schengen external border more intuitive, the Zurich Cantonal Police has commissioned secunet as general contractor for the "Greko NG" project to supply a new, modular border control system at Zurich Airport.

The previous technical border control infrastructure was completely renewed; the central interface of the new solution is secunet biomiddle. On the one hand, the middleware is the interface between passport and fingerprint readers, the border control application of the police officers and the background systems. On the other hand, secunet biomiddle, as a standard-compliant core component, ensures the modularity of the overall solution.

The highlight of the new system is the border control application, which was completely newly developed by secunet and tailored to the needs of the Zurich Cantonal Police. With the ergonomically designed user interface of the control system, the border control officers have all important data in view at all times during the identity check. The system supports them in the entire control process and relieves the border police officers in their security policing duties. With the new border control system, the electronic and optical data of all official machine-readable ID cards are now fully checked. About 350 employees were trained before the rollout of the new system and made fit for the new procedures. Thanks to the modularity of the border control system, the Zurich Cantonal Police can easily implement future Schengen projects such as the "Entry Exit System" (EES) or the "Registered Traveller Programme" (RTP).

"The joint project Greko NG consistently implements current requirements of the Schengen Border Code and is equipped for future standards. With short technical process times, high availability, a stable network and sophisticated equipment, illegal migration is effectively combated without generating longer waiting times in the queuing zones. The modern system interface is convincing and motivates the border control staff at Zurich Airport."
