SysEleven and DFS Aviation Services bring air traffic control system to the sovereign cloud

Memmingen Airport officially commissioned the PHOENIX WebInnovation air traffic control system, which is operated in the SysEleven cloud. It consists of a radar screen and electronic flight progress strips and was officially put into service by DFS Aviation Services (DAS). This is the first time that a sovereign cloud solution has been used for air traffic control (ATC) in the tower at a German commercial airport. At the same time, the previously paper-based flight progress strips were replaced by a modern, convenient electronic flight progress strip system. SysEleven is a wholly owned subsidiary of secunet and part of secunet cloud solutions.

SysEleven’s secure and reliable Kubernetes and cloud infrastructure “MetaKube” is the basis for DAS’ SaaS solution. The web-based PHOENIX WebInnovation air traffic control system enables the location-independent provision of an air traffic report for controllers and the creation of electronic flight progress strips. For the first time, operators become independent of hardware and operating systems and can thus simplify their IT infrastructure while using centralized maintenance concepts.

“SysEleven’s sovereign cloud infrastructure, consisting of MetaKube and OpenStack Cloud, is a prime example of the new possibilities for technological development in highly regulated industries,” said Norbert Müller, Managing Director at SysEleven and Vice President Cloud Solutions at secunet. He added, “This project is a role model for numerous public sector projects and organizations with critical infrastructure that pay special attention to high availability, data security, and digital sovereignty.”

A milestone in the technological modernization of air traffic control

“The commissioning of our innovative cloud-based air traffic control system at Memmingen Airport is a milestone on the road to the technological modernization of air traffic control,” said Christian Dorge, the team leader for software development at DFS Aviation Services (DAS). “In the future, we plan to use PHOENIX WebInnovation to meet the high safety standards and operational requirements of air traffic control using cloud-native principles. Users will benefit from the new user interface and increased efficiency in the transition from a paper-based to a digital solution.”

Andreas Pötzsch, Managing Director of DAS, said: “We’re already opening up new markets and customer groups with our SaaS solution. Our existing customers, which include air traffic control and airports, emergency and rescue services, and research institutions, all benefit from clearly more flexible deployment scenarios and from access to important flight information in real time, regardless of location and device.”
