Curriculum vitae

Günter Schäfer has been a university professor of computer science at Ilmenau University of Technology since 2005, where he heads the Telematics/Computer Networks department. In addition to his teaching and research duties, he was Vice Dean of the Faculty of Computer Science and Automation between 2011 and 2017, Chairman of the Faculty Association of Computer Science in the Federal Republic of Germany (2015-2017), Trusted Lecturer of the Foundation of German Business (2006-2016) and has been Dean of his faculty since June 2017, as well as a member of the Legal and Security Committee of the DFN Association (German Research Network) since 2005.

He began his professional career at the Institute for Telematics at the University of Karlsruhe (now Karlsruhe Institute of Technology) as a research assistant in 1994, having previously completed his degree in computer science at the Faculty of Computer Science there. After completing his doctorate (1998) on the topic of "Efficient authentication and key management in high-performance networks", he moved to the Ecole National Supérieure des Télécommunications in Paris in 1999 and worked there on projects on performance evaluation and optimisation of UMTS access networks as well as on network security in fixed and mobile communication networks.

In July 2000, Schäfer moved to the Department of Communication Networks at the Technical University of Berlin, where he worked on projects related to network security and mobile communications.
