As an IPsec-VPN gateway, the SINA Box connects protected or officially classified networks via the cost-effective medium Internet. The security-critical functionality is embedded into a specially minimalised and hardened Linux operating system. Special security-relevant functions extend this solution and enable protection up to the classification level TOP SECRET of the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI).

SINA is used in a range of different applications, for example to protect the communication networks IVBV and IVBB of the German Federal Administration or to ensure secure communication between all German embassies and the headquarters, the German Ministry for Foreign Affairs. SINA not only increases communication security in these networks, it also makes communication more cost-effective. SINA uses standard Internet connections so that expensive dedicated lines are no longer required for data transmission.
