The new German De-Mail communication system facilitates everyday life for companies, public authorities, and citizens. Official documents such as salary statements, contracts or bank account information can be sent and received just like normal email; with the difference that it is far more secure and legally binding. As part of an EU initiative to implement citizen portals all over Europe, for Germany the Federal Ministry of Interior (BMI) takes the lead in trusted Internet communication with De-Mail. For involved companies and authorities, the saving is immense.
Since the beginning of the Ministry of the Interior’s "citizen portal" project – now known as De-Mail – secunet experts have been permanent members of the project team. In close co-operation with the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI), secunet designed the basic concept of De-Mail and the individual services and developed them into the technical guideline. This will serve as a basis for the certification and accreditation of service providers. As a result of the intensive exchange with potential providers and users, secunet secured a solution that is requirements orientated. secunet has also contributed its comprehensive project know-how to the pilot project, which was carried out from October 2009 until March 2010.
