In addition to the personal data, the electronic passport (ePass) contains the passport photo and, in many cases, two fingerprints of the passport holder. These data are electronically stored on a chip. Supplemented by established security mechanisms, this achieves a considerably higher level of document-security and identity-protection. Furthermore, processes in various use-cases can be significantly optimised and quickened by using electronic data. In current field tests an automated border control via the direct matching of live photos and the data stored on the chip of an electronic passport is being tested, for example. Application-procedures and processes at public authorities can be supported as well; and other application scenarios will be added, among other things, by the introduction of the electronic passport.
