An electronic ID-document can be applied in private and governmental fields. In practice, the utilisation for sovereign purposes has prevailed so far. Especially at border control, eID play an important role for good reasons already today. In times of continuously increasing numbers of flight-passengers, eIDs and biometric supported border controls will noticeably optimize international travelling soon. As a result, passengers will have shorter waiting periods at the control stations, and airports and airlines can increase their passenger-processing.
The Federal Police are currently testing a new biometric supported border control-technology: within the pilot-project EasyPASS the automated matching of the passport photo in the electronic passport with a live-image of the passport holder is being tested for the first time in Germany. The aim is speeding up and simplifying the border control process. EasyPASS will provide knowledge about the optimisation of control-duration, evasion-security, user-friendliness and profitability regarding the future expansion to other airports. The project partners are the Federal Office for Information Security, L-1 Identity Solutions and secunet, of course.
secunet offers customised solutions and software components for border controls which make the process highly secure, yet flexible:
