Applying biometrics in aviation is of particular interest: A remarkable improvement of customer convenience and significant process-optimisation can be achieved at the same time. This is reflected in numerous, partially rather different topics, of civil aviation. These topics can affect passengers as well as the Federal Border Guard, the airport and/or the airlines:
Biometrics is the key technology for increasing the convenience of flight passengers at boarding. Passenger-processing can be quickened; existing processes can simultaneously be optimised. There is, for example, the opportunity to replace conventional passport-controls by automated biometric authentication. For the flight passenger, this means fast and secure boarding. To achieve this, an enrolment of the passenger is carried out at check-in or even earlier; subsequently, this allows for the use of so-called Quick Boarding Gates.
Further to quickened, secure passenger-processing, access-security and secure authentication at airports are other core issues in the field of aviation security. This is also emphasised by the EU regulations concerning civil aviation security and the according legal directives. In this context, the access control at airports can be supported by biometric access control-cards and the convenience for the users during authentication can be increased. At the same time, costs can be reduced and synergies resulting from multifunctional card-systems can be made use of.
Especially at border control, eIDs play an important role for good reasons already today. In current field tests an automated border control via the direct matching of live photos and the data stored on the chip of an electronic passport is being tested, for example.
To put it in a nutshell: process-optimisation, increasing customer convenience and improving the level of security are the three essential demands in the area of Aviation Security. In practice, these demands are taken care of in Registered Traveller Programs, Biometric Boarding and Simplified Passenger Processes – for example by secunet’s security-experts.
Make use of secunet’s solutions and know-how concerning these topics, too. Among our customers are airports and airlines as well as security authorities. Hence, we know the requirements of the different sides and include this experience in your project as well.
